What I’ve Actually Seen After 10 Years as a Ghost Guide

Ghost apparition floating in a dark historic building with candlelight in Savannah

After a decade of leading ghost tours through Savannah, I’ve accumulated a lot of stories. Not just the historical accounts I share with guests — but personal experiences that have shaped how I understand this city and what might be happening in it. When you spend night after night in places steeped in tragedy and mystery, the line between the explainable and the inexplicable starts to blur.

Here’s what I’ve actually seen and felt across ten years of this work.

The Subtle Shifts That Add Up

Most people expect dramatic apparitions or flying objects. Those can happen. However, the most compelling experiences are usually subtle — and they’re the hardest to dismiss precisely because of their consistency.

I’m talking about sudden, localized temperature drops that feel unnatural. Not a cool breeze — a cold that doesn’t make physical sense given the conditions. I’ve logged this most often in certain historic homes and the older sections of cemeteries. Then there are the unexplained scents: faint pipe tobacco in rooms where nobody is smoking, old-fashioned perfume in empty hallways. Fleeting, distinct, and impossible to source. And of course, the peripheral shadows — just at the edge of vision, gone the moment you turn to look directly. Guests report this constantly. I’ve seen it countless times myself.

The Encounters That Stuck With Me

At a particular historic inn, I once saw a small child’s face peering from an upstairs window, waving at our tour group. I pointed it out to a few guests, who also saw it. When we asked the innkeeper, they confirmed no children were staying there and the room was empty. It was brief, innocent, and utterly chilling.

On another occasion, during a late-night tour of a notoriously active square, I felt a distinct cold pressure on my shoulder. I turned, expecting a guest — but no one was close enough. The sensation lingered for a moment. Clear, physical contact from an unseen source.

On several occasions, using basic recording equipment, I’ve captured Electronic Voice Phenomena — faint, disembodied voices that respond to questions. These are often barely audible in the moment. On playback, however, they become clear. I don’t have a clean explanation for them.

What a Decade Has Actually Taught Me

I’ve guided countless skeptics and convinced believers. My own perspective has shifted from cautious curiosity to a deep respect for what I don’t know. I don’t claim to have answers. But I’ve witnessed enough to know that there’s more to Savannah than its architecture and history.

The energy of this city — shaped by centuries of life, death, and profound human experience — creates an environment where the past has a physical presence. Being a ghost guide isn’t just about telling stories. It’s about opening people’s minds to what might lie just outside everyday perception.

After ten years, I can say this clearly: Savannah’s ghosts aren’t just tales. They’re a palpable, often interactive part of its enduring character. Come find out for yourself.
